It’s an unfortunate fact that dogs get worms. There’s no stopping your dog from going outdoors in the park, backyard and for walks around the neighborhood, so it’s easy for him to pick up parasites from the soil.
Fortunately, there are many simple home remedies to treat your dog for worms if you prefer to eliminate additives, chemicals and artificial components from his diet.
Some of the remedies listed below are herbal, and others are homeopathic, so you can try as many as you like until you find one that works best for your dog.
1. Wormwood
The challenge with wormwood is that it also contains volatile oils along with tannins that might be harmful for your dog if you don’t use with care.
Overusing the herb can damage your dog’s nervous system, so use wormwood only if there’s an immediate need to eliminate parasites.
Finding the right balance is crucial: Add a quarter teaspoon of dried wormwood to the dog’s food. Do not use the treatment for more than three consecutive days.
2. Garlic
Like everything else, it must be used in moderation and even if you’re not sure about giving garlic to your dog, you’ll still reap a lot of rewards if you give him a very small amount.
When grated and mixed with fennel, garlic will boost your dog’s immune system and eliminate internal parasites. Beware: garlic has the potential to be toxic, so make sure you administer according to the dog’s weight.
3. Carrots
The chunky bits of carrots won’t be digested, so there’s no absorption or change in the nutritional and pH balance of the food.
However, the carrot scrapes the mucus, which houses the parasite, off the walls of the intestines.
Within a few hours, the dog will expel the carrot, in the same shape and size, along with the mucus and worms. Add grated carrots to the dog’s food and it will help to boost his immune system and help fight off infection.
4. Black Walnut
It’s safer than most commercial dewormers, but black walnut is potentially toxic if you administer the wrong dosage.
Use only if other natural remedies do not effectively expel the worms. However, if a solution such as garlic fails, it’s an indication of the state of your dog’s intestinal health.
In this case, you need to use products to boost his immune system, so consult with your vet before using black walnut. The herb is effective, but your dog might experience negative side effects, such as diarrhea, gastritis and vomiting.
5. Cloves
The effectiveness of clove is enhanced when combined with other antiparasitic agents such as black walnut and wormwood.
Give the dog a clove daily after every meal for an entire week and repeat the process every alternate week for two months – for a large dog. Do not administer clove treatments for a long time as it could be harmful to the dog.
6. Diatomaceous Earth (DE)
This remedy will reduce the number of worms, but you’ll need to find a different solution if your dog has tapeworms.
For smaller dogs, add a teaspoon to the dog’s food once daily. One tablespoon is effective for dogs over 55 pounds. Make sure it’s well mixed in with the food as inhaling the mixture will cause irritation.
7. Oregon Grape
It also serves as a liver tonic. Purchase Oregon grape in tincture form and administer 12 drops for every 20 pounds – twice daily.
It’s essential that you get the dosage right. Do not use this herb as a dewormer if your dog is pregnant or has liver disease.
8. Pumpkin Seeds
The seeds were also used to treat human parasitic conditions.
Recent studies revealed that pumpkin seeds can be used as an effective deworming agent to expel tapeworms and other parasites in both dogs and humans.
An amino acid, cucurbitacin, found in pumpkin seeds, paralyzes the worms and expels them from the digestive tract. Apart from its ability to treat parasites, pumpkin seeds offer other health benefits. They’re a rich source of fiber, iron, copper, magnesium, zinc, potassium, folic acid, amino acids, calcium and niacin, so they’re excellent for your dog’s overall health.
9. Supplemental Enzymes
Give your dog a dried fig daily as a tasty treat and the ficin will help to eliminate worms. Another effective enzyme is papain, found in papayas.
Apple cider vinegar and bromelain are readily available, and just one tsp daily is all that’s needed to attack parasites and help your dog get rid of the pesky worms.
10. Fasting
A 24-hour fast, once weekly, will help expel the worms and keep them from coming back.
Worms need food to survive and a few hours without food will cause them to get weak and clear out of the dog’s digestive system.
Always consult a vet before putting your dog on a fast, especially if he’s not in the best of health.
11. Probiotics
Purchase Acidophilus (non-dairy) and give the dog one capsule with every meal. The benefits of probiotics go well beyond parasite prevention – it also helps the body absorb essential nutrients and aids digestion.
Probiotics can be found naturally in plain yogurt – some brands provide 5-7 different cultures. Not all yogurts offer the same nutritional benefits, so read the labels before you buy.
12. Diet
You may reintroduce those foods into his diet only after you’ve thoroughly eliminated the worms.
Once you deworm the dog, you should wait at least three weeks and test to determine whether the worms have returned. At this point, the dog will be ready for another treatment if he tests positive for worms.

I have 4 dogs and I brought one of them to the vet and stool samples from her and another one. The vet charged me $70 for the exam and to check the stool samples.since he didn’t see anything in either of the samples, he sent me home empty handed and$70 poorer. Still had the tapeworm problem. I would have had no problem spending the money if he would have treated the dogs, but instead he just ripped me off. I had to figure out how to treat it on my own.
I only have this dog because her former owner dumped her by the side of the highway. I’m NOT a dog person, but she needed saving. I’m on SSD and that means a very limited income. $25 would have meant nothing to me when I was working, but now it can mean the difference between getting my medications or not. So cheeeeap means different things to different incomes. My sister thinks $1,000 is pocket change.

WELL EXPLAIN THIS. I raised Schnauzers. One of my vets xrayed my dog and she had 6 pups. My vet was closed and she goes into labor. I took her to another bet. He told me to leave her. I did not need to stay. I got back and had only 5 puppies but had proof there were six.
Another vet got my fog that had been jumped by a larger dog. He stuck him in his kennel and did not check him over he weekend.,RESULTS, dead dog and a broke heart. He went fishing.

Both Coconut Oil and ACV are antifungal and antibacterial. I use a number of natural remedies plus Newton’s Homeopathics Parasite remedy. I’m treating my pittie for tapeworms right now. I have no idea how she got them. I’ve had her for about 4 or 5 months and this is the first time I’ve seen any. SMC, don’t feel bad about the tapeworms. I battle them in my dogs because I own 3 acres and cannot possibly treat it all for fleas & other pests. All it takes is for your dog to swallow one infected flea and it will get tapeworms. My German Shepherd is so fast that he can catch a flea before it even has a chance to land on him. Yes you can. About a .5 ts in a cup of water. Then over time add more. Up to a ts a day will do. You can even mixed it with some water and spray it onto their coat to stop itching. A spray before heading out is also a great idea to help prevent new parasites.
You can put it in either. Doesn’t make any difference. Depends on THEIR preference. My dogs love it

Actually the SAFEST way to give your dog garlic is to give them Brewers Yeast and Garlic tablets regularly/daily w/one of their meals. Don’t give garlic in a jar. It’s been processed and most of it is from China.

Besides the alternative vet recommended solutions, all natural is better than what is often prescribed, and cheaper. People in general are here on this sight because they are just trying to do the right thing for their animals no matter what their financial situation might be. There are some things you can do yourself for your animal and there are some things that do require your vets attention. Most people know that, and should not be put down for looking for an alternative.

When using DE, you want to be sure to add water or other liquid to their food. DE is drying and if no extra liquid is given with it, the dog may get constipated. We used 1/4 tsp of DE in each meal along with 1 Tbspn water or chicken broth added to their raw ground meat; 2 meals per day. Worms were all gone in 10 days or less but we kept him on it for 30 days to be sure no eggs survived. Dog is 10 lbs.
My dog has worms, again. I’ve taken her to a vet (at a local Pet Supplies Plus) and had her dewormed, twice. She’s a 7 month old Terrier mix. I live on a fixed income and can not at the present time afford to take her back to the vet. I live in an apartment building with other people and dogs. I ALWAYS clean up after my dog, but others do not. I need some help to get rid of these worms once and for all!!! I NEED SPECIFICS!
