We all like to keep our homes neat and clean, but keeping our four-legged friend healthy is definitely a priority. Here we have a list of 5 common household cleaners that can actually harm your beloved dog (or even you).
Some of the following cleaning chemicals are so toxic to canines that some of these can even kill your curious pooch.
1. Ammonia
Even the dog owners who don’t use ammonia are in danger.
The thing is that it can actually be found in most oven and glass cleaners, and you probably use those!
2. Products That Contain Chlorine
Like it is the case with the previous cleaner, there are various products out there that contain chlorine.
Make sure you take your dog outside when using the following:
- all-purpose cleaners
- toilet bowl cleaners
- laundry detergent
- dishwashing detergents
Even the vapors left behind when cleaning with chlorine products can hurt your dog’s skin and eyes, while licking it could cause them to become very sick.
3. Toilet Bowl Cleaners
Toilet bowl cleaners are extra harmful. Not only do these contain chlorine, they usually contain other harmful chemicals as well.
These products can cause:
- skin irritation
- illness
- diarrhea
- vomiting
- seizures
To be safe, make sure you use nontoxic toilet bowl cleaning products.

4. Drain Cleaners
Should you end up with a serious case of clogged drain, you need to make sure your furry friend is not around when you resort to drain cleaning products.
Common drain cleaners are toxic to your pooch and can cause them to become disoriented.
(Although it would probably be fun to see Fido going all crazy not knowing where he is or what is going on, we suggest you find an alternative source of leisure activity…)
5. Laundry Detergent
Like toilet bowl cleaners, almost all detergents contain both chlorine AND other chemicals harmful to your pet. The safest way to wash your pooch’s favorite blanket is to choose a detergent that is free of all dyes and harmful chemicals.
