Your dog is probably the most sympathetic pet you will ever have. They will share your most joyful moments and will also feel your deepest feelings of grief, but can they actually cry tears?
Physical pain & infections
If you’ve seen your dog’s eyes become watery, it most probably die to physical pain he’s experiencing. Someone might have stepped on his paw or his tail, or your pooch might be in pain due to some medical or health problems, but it is unlikely his tears are caused by some emotional purposes.
How to clean dried tears
Especially if dirt or some other filthy debris gets involved, they can form a type of dirty film around your dog’s eyes and that means it is time for some washing up.
Use damp washcloth to wash away the dirt. Gently wipe the area around the eyes avoiding the eyes themselves.
Give your ball of fur a treat after this cleaning session, so he will sit still the next time his eyes need the treatment.
Allergies & infections
Just like humans, dogs also shed tears because of allergies. Another reason is infection. A speck of dust or some dirt caught in his eye while he was exploring may be irritating your dog’s eyes, and even cause various infections.
A tear every now and then shouldn’t be a problem, but if his eyes are constantly watering, you should take your pet to the vet in order to see if there is a serious medical condition behind the issue. If you notice that the tears are not clear, but yellow or bloody and the eyes are swollen a bit, something is definitely wrong and it is high time for an exam.
