Origin
The breed’s name varied throughout the centuries. They were originally called the Canis Melitaeus in Latin, and also known in English as the ancient dog of Malta, the Roman Ladies’ Dog or the Maltese Lion Dog.
Though the exact origin is unknown, this ancient breed is thought to have descended from a Spitz-type dog found among the Swiss Lake Dwellers and was selectively bred to attain its small size. There is also some evidence that the breed originated in Asia and is related to the Tibetan Terrier.
Aristotle was the first to mention its name Melitaei Catelli in one of his first written documents around 370 BC.
Description
These pooches have slightly rounded skulls, with a finger-wide dome, a black button nose and brown eyes, while their body is quite compact.
Their coat is long, silky and of pure white color. Some might have curly hair, however, this is considered a fault.
As far as the size is concerned, adult Maltese can range from roughly 3 to 10 lb, though breed standards, as a whole, call for weights between 5-8 lbs.
When it comes to their disposition, these cuddly companions are extremely lively and playful. Some may occasionally be snappish with smaller children, but socializing them at a young age will reduce this habit.
