If you are in the need of a cute small-sized terrier type breed, the Yorkshire Terrier is certainly the pooch to consider.

Origin

The breed is also called a Yorkie and it originated in Yorkshire, a region in northern England, during the mid 19th century when the workers from Scotland came to Yorkshire in search of work and brought with them several different varieties of small terriers.

This funny looking dog was used to catch rats in clothing mills and also for rat-baiting.

Description

The Yorkshire Terrier won’t weight over 7 pounds (3.2 kg) and the average height is 7.5-9 inches.

The pup will most likely come in gray, black, or tan coat. The hair should be glossy, fine, straight, and silky.

Their trademark is the coat that is typically grown out very long and is parted down the middle of the back.

Since they are a toy dog breed, their life span is long, usually between 13-16 years.

As for the temperament, the Yorkie carries itself very upright and, though small, this pooch is very protective, active, and curious and requires a lot of attention.

Pros

  • cat friendly
  • good watchdog
  • intelligent
  • adaptable

Cons

  • hypoallergenic
  • requires a lot of grooming
  • bronchitis
  • prone to dilation of lymph vessels called Lymphangiectasia

Should I adopt/buy a Yorkie?

If you are looking for a proud small-sized ball of fur that you can groom like there’s no tomorrow, the Yorkshire Terrier is definitely the right toy for you.

Hypoallergenic! I’d agree that that’s a huge ‘con’ for me. Any dog I get must be highly allergenic. While they say one ‘pro’ is that they’re good watchdogs, but maybe 7 lbs is too big and dangerous. Do they make smaller ones that would be safer for my guests to be around?
