The German Longhaired Pointer is a medium to large sized breed of dog developed mainly for hunting, making the breed great watchdogs, but they are also excellent with kids, which is why they are popular family dogs as well.
Origin
The breed was developed in Germany for use as a pointer. It was originally a rather slow dog, and was then crossed with setters and English Pointers in the 19th century in order to improve their speed.
Description
Their average height is between 24 and 28 in (60–70 cm) for males, 23–26 in (58–66 cm) for females, and average weight goes from 53 to 69 lbs (24 – 31 kg) for males, and 44 to 60 lbs (20 – 27 kg) for females.
The coat is medium length, about 1.2 to 2.0 inches (3 to 5 cm) long on the body, with the feathering is somewhat longer, slightly wavy, but not curly.
They come in dark chocolate, white and chocolate, roan and brown roan.
