Origin
The Elkhound has served as a hunter, guardian, herder, defender and it is known for its courage in tracking and hunting moose, bears or wolves.
The breed was first presented at a dog exhibition in Norway in 1877.
Description
The Elkhound is a medium-sized, extremely hardy dog. The average height is 19-21 in (49–52 cm), and weight 48-55 lbs (22–25 kg).
Their grey, white, and black coat consists of two layers. An underlying dense smooth coat ranging from black at the muzzle, to silvery grey on its legs, and an overlaying black-tipped protective guard coat. The tail should be tightly curled.
Though they are bold, energetic, independent and effective guardians, Norwegian Elkhounds are extremely friendly, great with the little ones and quite playful, which makes them a fantastic choice as a family dog.
