If your dog just can’t put any weight on, even though you are feeding him properly and regularly, this probably means he has parasites.

Canines are prone to having parasites, and since these organisms live off and depend on your fury canine friend, they can make it impossible for him to gain any weight. Some of the most common intestinal parasites known to be hosted by our pet dogs are: Whipworm, Hookworm, Roundworm and Giardia. Today we are focusing on the last two.

Roundworm

This parasitic worm is quite common in puppies as it is extremely easy to contract and spread, while also difficult to control.

They can even be passed on from a mother to her pups. Your dog can also catch it if he gets in contact with infected poo.

The symptoms of roundworm include weight loss, a potbellied appearance, diarrhea, vomiting and a dull coat, and should you notice any of these in your canine friend, a trip to the vet is necessary.

To make matters worse, Roundworm is actually one of the parasites that you can pick up as well, so it is crucial to make sure your dog is free of these nasty worms.

Giardia

This single-celled parasite is also easy to catch (as simple as drinking water containing the parasite), and once caught, it takes up residence in your dog’s intestine.

The symptoms are weight loss, diarrhea, dehydration, loss of appetite, listlessness and soft stool, however, diagnosing this parasite can be tricky and your vet might request multiple stool samples.
