Talk about a trained and devoted assistance dog!

A golden retriever named Figo jumped in front of a moving school bus in Brewster and took most of the blow for his blind owner, Audrey Stone, on Monday.

The school bus driver didn’t see Stone and her dog, who were crossing the street in the unpainted crosswalk.

He struck the pair, leaving the dog’s leg cut down to the bone and Stone with three broken ribs, a fractured ankle, a fractured right elbow and a cut to her head.

The police investigation determined that the dog threw himself between his owner and the bus based on the fur they found under the front side wheel of the vehicle.

Both Figo and Stone are recovering well. Stone remained in Danbury Hospital, while Figo will stay at Middlebranch Veterinary for as long as it takes Stone to recover before she can take him home.

The driver is being investigated for failing to yield to a pedestrian and is temporarily taken off duty.
