Obesity in dogs is definitely a growing problem (no pun intended), as overweight pooches are more prone to serious health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. If you’ve noticed that your dog has started putting on some extra weight lately, it is certainly time for our two-fold weight loss program, consisting of diet change and exercise routine.

Today on our menu: exercise.

Dog Workout

Just like us humans, canines can lose their excess weight by exercising, so let’s start from the basics.

If you happen to be a lazy dog owner who skips walking your pooch every time you have a chance, it is time to change your habit. Make sure you and your furry friend go for a nice walk or a run each day for a specific period of time.

Make a room in your schedule for playtime. Play fetch or tug-of-war, and if you already have an exercise schedule, make sure you increase the frequency of these sessions, or the intensity. And this is a win-win situation as it will be beneficial for you as well.

Lazy Pooches

Most dogs will be more than happy about these sessions as they will be getting more attention from their beloved owners. However, some dogs, especially the ones that are quite obese and out-of-shape, may be quite the challenge. If your pooch belongs to this group, start slowly and then gradually bring up the pace.

If you are going for a walk, stay somewhat close to home at the beginning as your dog may feel tired rather soon.
