If you’ve finally decided to get a puppy you should take the time and seriously assess the space you have available where the puppy will grow up, before you actually take the plunge.

Puppies grow up rather quickly and before you know it you will have a full size dog on your hands that requires a certain amount of space to grow up healthy.

If you live in an apartment any kind of toy dog will be happy to be your companion, from a Chihuahua to a Pug. It should be noted that certain medium size dogs don’t mind smaller spaces, such as Bulldogs and even Beagles.

If you are thinking about getting anything that grows up to be larger than a beagle it is more or less mandatory to have a house with a decent size backyard where the dog will be able to roam around most of the year. You don’t necessarily need to keep the dog in the yard at all times, but the yard is necessary for your and for the dog’s sake.

Dog breeds that don’t mind city houses with relatively smaller lots include Golden Retrievers, Labs and German Shepherds. You will need a considerably larger space for a Great Dane, St. Bernard and even a Doberman.
