Polydipsia, or excessive drinking of water, can be a sign of early kidney or liver diseases, so it might be a good idea to take your pooch to the vet for a checkup.
On the other hand, polydipsia can also be caused by the change in your dog’s diet, or if you started giving him some new medication recently, so let’s delve a little deeper in the reasons behind excessive water drinking in dogs.
What do we mean by Excessive
During hot summers an increase in water consumption is perfectly normal, but if your canine friend continues to drink like crazy even now when the summer is over, you might be looking at a serious health problem. (On average, dogs drink about 30 milliliters of water per pound of body weight daily).
The problem, however, might not be with his kidneys or liver. Some dog foods are too salty or sugary, which can make dogs more thirsty than usual.
Health Issues
Aside from the aforementioned kidney and liver diseases, polydipsia may be the sign of diabetes, adrenal and thyroid dysfunction, certain cancers, hormonal imbalances, urinary tract infections, elevated blood calcium levels, and so on.
Since it is always better to be safe than sorry, pay your vet a visit as soon as noticed any signs of excessive water drinking in your pooch.
