There is nothing worse in the world than when you’re sick, except for when you have to watch your loved ones battle an illness while you remain healthy, but in addition to being able to pass illnesses to other humans, we can also pass them onto our dogs.
Keeping in mind the fact that dogs (and cats) can catch “our” illness gives us the chance to react and try to prevent disease transmission.
There have been particular cases of dogs catching the flu from their owners, thus by being well aware that we are sick and that we should not be taking care of or coming in contact with other people or pets allows us to be better safe than sorry.
When you feel you are coming down with something arrange for a dog sitter or a friend to take your dog for a few days so you can recuperate in peace without having to worry about infecting your pooch. If this isn’t an option, ask your dog walker to take on extra shifts or help out with handling your dog’s food and water to limit the risk of getting the dog sick.
Make sure you and your dog don’t sleep in the same room and try not to touch any of the pooch’s stuff or the dog itself. This will reduce the risk of infecting the dog and allow you to get better without the feeling of guilt.
