Though chewing on various non-edible objects is normal canine behavior, constantly eating newspapers, cardboard boxes, napkins or other paper-based products is not, and this condition is known as Pica disorder.

Canines with this behavioral disorder tend to ingest, sometimes even large quantities of paper-based products, as opposed to only chewing on or destroying them.

Sometimes though, eating non-nutritious food items (like food wrapping) is merely because the dog is hungry and wants to fill his stomachs with something which smells like food, however, if you notice similar behavior in your furry friend, even though he is eating properly and regularly, make sure you speak with your vet about it.

Sometimes, only adjusting his portions or switching to a high fiber diet can help, but it is always better to be on the safe side.

What Causes Pica?

This compulsive behavior can sometimes develop during early puppyhood when your pooch is doing his first exploring of his environment via chewing on virtually all objects around him.

Paper products happen to have a very pleasing texture in comparison to other objects, thus young pups continue to search for that familiar, soft material.

Another common cause is boredom. Your pooch may simply be bored and is ingesting items in order to entertain himself.

These are the very first signs of Pica compulsive behavior in canines, so if you start noticing them, make sure you take your canine buddy to your vet as soon as possible.
