Making Homemade Puppy Clothes

October 8, 2019

Generally, puppies don’t really need to wear clothes. They are born with their own perfect wardrobe in the form of their coat and fur, but sometimes, when you take your pooch for a walk on a chilly day, he’ll appreciate a nice sweater.

Now, trendy and fashionable puppy clothing from the pet supply store can be quite expensive and your pet may outgrow it pretty fast.

The most economic solution is to take one of your old sweaters or sweatshirts and in a few simple steps, re-design them into some warm and cool clothing for your pup.

Taking Measures

Use a tape measure to gauge around your puppy’s neck and compare it to the cuff opening on your old sweater to make sure it won’t be too tight around your pooch’s neck.

Take any other necessary measurements, writing them down as you go. Basically, you’ll need to know: the width of his chest between his front legs; the length of his neck; the measurement from the base of his neck to the top of his arm; the length of his back from the base of his tail to the base of his neck.

Time To Make Some Cuts

Now, take one sleeve of your sweater and mark the length of your puppy’s back.

Using the scissors, cut the sleeve off at the marked point.

Make sure you mark the cuff of the sleeve to the same measurement as your puppy’s neck length.

Cut out the armholes of your puppy’s sweater right below the marking of the neck measurement.

Mark the measurement from the base of his neck to the top of his arm, and use your pup’s chest measurement to ensure that the armholes are spaced appropriately.

Finally, finish off the cut edge (the one opposite the cuff edge) using the zigzag stitch on the sewing machine, or you can do it manually.

And, voila – you ball of fur has a brand new sweater that even matches your own style of clothing. The perfect way to make your envious neighbors jealous.
