The Alano Español (or the Spanish Bulldog), is a large working dog breed originating from Spain and is best known for its former use during Spanish bullfights.
Origin
The name Alano comes from the Iranian tribe of Alani, nomadic pastoralists who arrived in Spain during the Migration Period in the 5th Century. However, the first written reference to the breed was found in a chapter of the 14th century “Book of the Hunt of Alfonso XI,” in which hunting dogs called Alani are described as having beautiful colors and being great war dogs.
Description
Average height for males is 23 to 25 inches (58–64 cm), while females go from 22 to 24 inches (56–61 cm), whereas the typical weight is from 75 to 89 pounds (34–40 kg).
They have a short and thick coat and come in fawn, black and brindle, sable wolf, red, yellow…
Since Alanos were used for hunting in packs, they are very sociable with other dogs by nature, nevertheless, they need to be well socialized with humans and other animals when young, if they are to be safely kept as pets.
As large working dogs, Alano Español needs regular training and activity on a daily basis.
