Entlebucher Sennenhund or Entlebucher Mountain Dog is a medium-sized breed that is easily trainable and suitable for families in need of a feisty watchdog.

Origin

The Entlebucher was first described as a separate breed in 1889, though it is believed they descended from large molossers brought to Switzerland by the Romans in the first century B.C.

The first breed club was not formed until 1926, when The Entlebucher breed was gradually restored.

The pooches were originally kept for guarding and herding, however, today the breed is usually kept as a lively companion.

Description

Breed’s trademark is a square, sturdy, muscular body. The smooth coat is close and smooth with symmetrical markings of black, tan, and white. The white markings are visible on toes, tail-tip, chest and blaze where the fur is soft and fluffy. Height at the withers is between 19-20 inches (48–50 cm), while weight varies from 45 to 65 lbs (20–30 kg).

Though excellent watchdogs by nature, these pooches are quite friendly and loving, however, the breed should be well socialized early in life with other dogs and people.

Pros

  • great watchdog
  • trainable
  • kid friendly
  • playful

Cons

  • prone hip dysplasia
  • hemolytic anemia can occur

Should I adopt/buy an Entlebucher Mountain Dog?
