The Manchester Terrier is a smooth-haired terrier type breed which ranks pretty high when it comes to smart, intelligent and trainable watchdogs.
Origin
During the early 19th century, England faced a huge rat problem due to country’s poor sanitation, and the rat killing became a popular sport. John Hulme, the sport enthusiast who perfected the sport of rat-baiting and rabbit coursing, crossed a whippet to a cross-bred terrier to produce a tenacious, streamlined animal better suited to the sport.
As in its native country, the Manchester gained quick acceptance as a recognized breed in the US as well. In 1886, just two years after the American Kennel Club was organized, the first black and tan terrier was registered in the stud book.
