Origin
The breed was favored by the Chinese royals and were so prized that for years the Chinese refused to sell, trade, or give away any of the dogs.
The first dogs of the breed weren’t imported into Europe until 1930, and were classified by the Kennel Club as “Apsos.”
Description
The Shih Tzu is a small, sturdy little dog with a short muzzle, large dark eyes and soft and long double coat. It won’t grow over 101⁄2 inches (6.7 cm) at the withers and the ideal weight is between 10 and 16 lbs (4.5 to 7.3 kg).
The coat may be of any color, though white and with blazes of grey are frequently seen.
Shih Tzus are loyal, affectionate, outgoing, and alert. Training and proper socializing should start at a young age in order for a Shih Tzu to obey basic commands and become an excellent watch dog.
