Sussex Spaniel is a small and compact version of the Clumber Spaniel. The breed is extremely friendly with kids and cats, which makes these pooches excellent family dogs.

Origin

Back in 1795, East Sussex district needed a breed that could alert the hunter in a specific way on his quarry.

Various breeds were crossed (white Norfolk Spaniel, Field Spaniel, early English Springer Spaniel, etc), and the Sussex was born.

The breed was made specifically to inherit the barking ability that was not common in most Spaniel breeds during this era.

Description

Sussex Spaniel is typically 13–15 in (33–38 cm) tall, with the usual weight range of 35–45 lb (16–20 kg). They are roughly rectangular and their most noticeable feature is their golden liver-colored coat, unique to the breed.

Their coat is thick, usually with a slight wave to it. They have feathering on the chest, legs and ears, as well as a weather resistant undercoat with a silky outer coat. The eyes are hazel in color.

The breed is extremely friendly with a slow-paced, calm temperament, however, they don’t lack energy and enthusiasm. Always eager to be around people, the Sussex is excellent around children, and can be quite protective of its family.
