According to many studies, the number one reason why dog owners seek veterinary help are ear infections. Although the problems can easily be avoided by simply regularly and thoroughly cleaning the ears of their beloved pups, ear troubles remain to be an issue to many owners.

The problem seems to lie in the fact that many owners don’t know how or are afraid to deal with something as delicate as the dog’s ears.

Another problem is that many dogs don’t like having their ears cleaned, which only makes the ordeal that more difficult for the already nervous owner. However, there are some ways to make the whole thing more pleasurable for both the pup and the human.

Practice Makes Perfect

Start off small – don’t go bluntly grabbing your dog and scrubbing its ears like a madman.

You need to practice handling the ears as gently as you can, preferably while giving treats.

As you treat your dogs with its favorite delicious snack, massage the outside, and eventually, the inside of the ear.

Repeat this procedure until he or she starts enjoying having his ears handles. When your dog accepts this kind of manipulation, introduce the cloth, and eventually cotton balls, into your new “tradition.”

Every Ear Is A Different Story

Not all ears were created equal. Pups that have big, heavy, floppy ears need to have their ears cleaned more frequently, while pooches that hair a lot of hair in their ears require additional maintenance. Dogs with prick ears require minimal upkeep.

How Often Should You Clean The Ears?

Weekly ear cleaning will keep your pup’s ears free of wax and all kinds of debris, and it will make you used to the notion of “clean, healthy dog ears.” If you pup has hairy ears, trim the hair before commencing the cleaning.
