Why Do Some Poodles Have Such Soft Coats?

We all know cats are pretty soft and if they like to be petted, it feels like touching the clouds. On the other hand, most dogs have wiry, coarse coats that can be very clean and well groomed but nothing compares to the softness of a kitten.

Or does it?

Recently we have come across a few toy poodles with coats so soft and personalities so spirited that we thought to ourselves for the nth time, “Yes, poodles definitely are the perfect pet”.

They are easy to own, practically don’t even shed so you can forget about allergies, and will jump through hoops to make you happy. But what about their coats?

Some poodles are so soft people stop at the park every time they see them just to touch them, even if just for a second.

This can annoy the owner a little bit, but if the dog doesn’t mind and likes the attention, let it have it.

Still, there are poodles that regardless of their age and size have coats that are fluffy and wiry, and no matter which shampoo you use or whether you air-dry or fluff-dry them, it still isn’t as soft as you want it to be?

So, what can you do?

Well, the answer is – let it be. Poodles inherit coat softness from their parents, and there is very little that you can do to change it. Those who won the gene-pool jackpot in the coat department will go through many coat changes and will still come out as soft as a pillow. Others can be groomed, fluffed, shampooed and put through the ordeal of trying to make them into doggy beauty queens, but their coats still won’t change much.
